Award-winning HR manager on how to standout in a tight talent market

‘The war for talent is real - and the market is very shallow’

What makes a great place to work? Is it the culture? The CEO? The perks and benefits? The truth is, employee expectations around their organizational offerings have changed so dramatically over the past few years that employers are still playing catch up.

What’s good for one employee simply won’t work for their colleague – meaning a one size fits all approach is doomed to fail. Which is why standing out will make all the difference to talent attraction and retention this year.

HRD recently launched our Best Places to Work 2023, looking for companies that have gone above and beyond in their overall people practices. Assessing factors such as employee satisfaction, retention rates, diversity levels, and brand reputation, HRD uncovered the crème de la crème of Canadian companies.

Speaking to HRD, Masa Idelbi, HR manager at Rohit Group of Companies, a commercial and residential developer based in Alberta and one of our winners, says it’s their investments into mental health and learning that’s made all the difference to their people.

“We’re big on upskilling and reskilling our staff through our strong learning and development culture,” she says. “The war for talent is real, and the market is very shallow. We have always been proactive with learning, which is an advantage.”

According to our report, Rohit Group’s employees are also highly satisfied with the company’s job-related training, financial support for formal education, and career advancement opportunities. Our respondents also noted that the family-friendly and customizable mental health benefits are generous and provide up to $5,000 annually per employee.

Speaking to HRD, Idelbi also references upskilling as being super important to their culture.

“The feedback we received from [our people] is their top two priorities are career advancement and learning and development,” she says. “With that in mind, we capitalize on the Canada Alberta job grant, which is an amazing subsidy offered by the government to employers investing in their people.

“There is Canada Ontario and Canada Saskatchewan job grants as well. Our programs offer a variety of different technical and interpersonal courses catered to our growing business. With that in mind, we launched rockets University to address rotations ripe for growth, upskilling and reskilling.”
