Talk about a hot job market: when Canadian jobseekers are on the hunt, they’re usually looking at two or more options waiting for their decision.

Nearly half of applicants in the country (49%) receive multiple offers simultaneously when they’re searching for a new job, so companies should consider well what they lay out on the table, a survey by global recruitment firm Robert Half Finance & Accounting suggests.

“Chances are, one manager’s ideal candidate is someone else’s as well – which is why it’s crucial that businesses put their best foot forward and act quickly to successfully land the talent they need,” said David King, senior district president for Robert Half.

Move fast – or you’ll lose

The so-called ‘talent war’ places significant pressure on hiring managers to move fast if they want to go after the best of the best. This is because candidates are equally decisive.

“The competition for top talent is tough, and candidates rarely wait long when they receive a great offer,” the recruitment firm said.

Seven in 10 candidates, on average, decide on an offer within two days – if not sooner, the survey showed. They often base their decision on a few factors, namely:

  • Salary
  • Benefits
  • Responsibilities and challenges of the new role
  • Commute
  • Advancement potential

“While competitive salary and benefits packages remain crucial, promoting what makes their company a great place to work needs to be an ongoing focus for hiring managers hoping to tip the scales in their favour,” King said.

“Applicants are moving quickly to decide between offers, and organizations with a reputation for supporting their staff’s individual needs and professional goals will stand out for their commitment to the satisfaction and success of their employees.”
