'Uncertainty has everything to do with risk': bestselling author on managing uncertainy

HRDTV Thought Leader Series: Olympic skier Vince Poscente

Vince Poscente went from recreational skier to Olympic competitor in only four years – he uses what he learned during that incredible journey to help business leaders overcome obstacles with resilience and goal setting.

His insights are particularly relevant in addressing today’s challenges with attracting and recruiting talent, and he sat down with Chris Davis of HRDTV to share some of them.

When speaking about how he and his team instill purpose in the HR teams he works with, he mentions a concept he calls “emotional buzz” based on research by Dr. Lee Pulos which found that the subconscious mind works at a much higher level of processing than the conscious mind.

This principle can be applied to HR practices, he said.

The ant and the elephant

“Imagine there's an ant on the back of an elephant,” Poscente said, “and the ant is making decisions on direction: ‘we’re going west,’ says the ant, but what if the elephant is headed east? So the biggest problem is when there's a discord between intention, and a sub-conscious agenda. And for us HR professionals, how do we actually engage that alignment between the ant and the elephant is that we make a decision on the back of the elephant, and the elephant is headed in the same direction.

“Then, things get easier.”

When everyone in an organization is heading in the same direction, Poscente explained, teams can begin operating on momentum.
