'As of Right' rules could lure more healthcare workers to Ontario

The Ontario government today proposed new "As of Right" rules, which entitles healthcare workers registered in other provinces to begin working and caring for people in the region.

Speaking in the media release, Premier Doug Ford labelled the move as “bold, innovative and creative,” adding that amendments will “cut down unnecessary bureaucratic delays and help bring reinforcements to the frontlines of our health care system.”

The legislative changes are set to go live in February 2023 and, if passed, will help make care and jobs more accessible across Ontario  - something sorely needed in the ongoing talent shortage.

Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, added that the “As of Right” rules will help recruit more employees into the healthcare sector, adding that a “highly-skilled health care worker from British Columbia or Nova Scotia shouldn’t have to pause their career or face barriers to practice here in Ontario.”

If passed, these changes signify a move towards a “pan-Canadian” registration model – something which be the first of its kind for the sector in Canada. The government added that under the new rules, healthcare workers will only be eligible for transferals if they have produced “safe, competent, and ethical” care in their home province.
