Keynote speaker and leading diversity strategist Tina Varughese spoke with HRDTV about the role that humour can play in building cultural diversity and inclusion strategies in the workplace.

She shared strategies she uses to facilitate open and authentic communication amongst employees, including “safety check-ins” which she says are essential to establishing psychological safety.

“I’m a big believer of high touch versus high tech,” Varughese said. “I think that people want connection and collaboration. You can do that remote, you can do that in person, but just seeing people’s faces and hearing that vocal intonation … the more we communicate at the workplace, we’re going to feel more comfortable to share some of those experiences in a business setting.”

To hear more of Varughese’s thoughts on building cultural diversity and inclusion in the workplace, including the importance of humour, watch the whole interview here, and check out the rest of the HRDTV Thought Leader series.
