Government reaches tentative deal with education worker union

The Ontario government has reached a tentative agreement with the Ontario Council of Educational Workers (OECW), the union representing thousands of education workers across the province.

Details of the agreement, however, have yet to be made public.

“This tentative agreement will be of benefit to the students who attend Catholic schools and the hard working and dedicated OCEW staff who serve them,” says Patrick Daly, president of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association.

“Details of the tentative agreement will be shared following ratification. We are appreciative of the efforts of our bargaining team, Trustee Associations and Crown partners and the representatives of the Ontario Council of Education Workers."

Yesterday, Stephen Leece, minister of education, said that keeping children in their classes has always been their number one priority.

“This further demonstrates that our government can deliver agreements with education unions that ensure children remain in class, where they belong.

“Students across Ontario are benefitting from our government's $650-wmillion increase in funding for this school year, along with the 7,000 additional education workers funded by our government since taking office, to help get kids back on track.”

The new tentative deal will go through union members for ratification in the coming weeks.
