'We would like to help': EllisDon to offer jobs to Ukrainian refugees

Ontario-based construction firm EllisDon has announced that it is opening its doors for Ukrainian refugees who would want to work for the company.

Geoffrey Smith, chief executive officer and president of EllisDon, said on LinkedIn that they will find immediate employment for the refugees to work for the construction industry.

"EllisDon is extending an invitation to any qualified Ukrainian refugee to join us now for a great career," said Smith in a statement.

"We will find immediate employment to suit their qualifications and will strive to work with our union brothers and sisters to place qualified tradespeople on projects within our industry," he added.

"We are an industry in need of great people and would like to help the great people of Ukraine."

Smith's announcement came after the government of Ontario announced a string of support schemes for arriving Ukrainian families to give them access to better jobs and help them settle in the province.

Labour Minister Monte McNaughton said in an announcement that Ontario is in a "strong position" to welcome Ukrainian newcomers, with over 338,000 good jobs waiting to be filled, and hundreds of businesses who are issuing job offers.

"We are in a strong position to welcome Ukrainian newcomers and help them find good jobs when they are ready to work," said McNaughton.

Employees donate $250,000

Meanwhile, this is not the first time that EllisDon extended help to Ukrainians while they are in the middle of a humanitarian crisis due to the war against Russia.

The company back in March donated $250,000 to the Canadian Red Cross after matching funds raised by its employees.

"The situation in Ukraine is urgent and we hope this collective donation to the Canadian Red Cross, achieved through the generous people of EllisDon can help alleviate the grievous suffering the people of the country are facing," said Smith in a statement.

"It is impossible to fathom what they are experiencing, and this is one way we've committed to show our support. We can only hope this unjust invasion ends quickly."

The funds extended to the Canadian Red Cross will be used to help in the ongoing relief efforts in Ukraine, as well as extend assistance for its long-term recovery, resilience, and other critical humanitarian activities.

Canadian Red Cross was named as one of the Companies with the Top HR Innovators in Canada. Read the full report here.
