Unlocking innovative rewards and transformative culture – with Tawnie Dahl of Transalta

In this edition of Canadian HR Reporter TV, we sat down with Tawnie Dahl, the Director of Executive Compensation and Total Rewards at Transalta. Dahl was recognized as one of the excellence awardees at the 10th annual Canadian HR awards for her ground-breaking innovation and contributions to cultural transformation.

Transalta’s shift from traditional to clean energy prompted a re-evaluation of its culture. To align the company with its clean energy goals – Dahl emphasized five essential pillars, including results, purpose, learning, individual contributions, and psychological safety.

Transalta’s success stems from its Total Rewards team, focused on attracting diverse talent in the renewable energy sector as well as its Boost and Bolt programs. The Boost program allows employees to reward their peers quarterly for demonstrating behaviors aligned with the company’s cultural pillars. Meanwhile, the Bolt program is a nomination-based initiative where employees are recognized for their contributions, achievements, and innovative thinking.

Transalta’s initiatives have not only resonated with employees but have also served as key performance indicators, reinforcing the significance of rewards and recognition in the company. When asked about Transalta’s latest initiatives, Dahl noted:

"I've never had the opportunity to create such innovative reward and recognition programs... I'm so proud to work for a company that allows us the ability to really focus on rewarding our people."
