Sweet farewell: this resignation takes the cake

Resignations can illicit feelings of relief or panic depending on the individual, but it’s hard to stay mad if the consolation is a piece of cake.

Sweet farewell: this resignation takes the cake

When English immigration officer Chris Holmes decided to leave his job to focus on his a baking company, he knew the perfect way to do it – on a giant piece of his new merchandise.

Holmes became a father to son Benjamin five weeks ago, and started considering resigning his job at Stansted Airport six months ago, ruminating over the idea of a cake-based resignation for months.

When it came to making the cake, he practiced the writing on a piece of paper, describing it as “fiddly”.

"I would have done it a bit neater if I'd known it was going to go viral,” he said.

Addressed “To The Management”, Holmes told his bosses: “Having recently become a father I now realise how precious life is and how important it is to spend my time doing something that makes me, and other people, happy. For that reason, I hereby give notice of my resignation, in order that I may devote my time and energy to my family, and my cake business."

Holmes established “Mr Cake”, his baking business, more than two years ago, working part time to establish the company. A spokesperson for Border Force, his former employer, said the cake was “very nice” and since the letter got international attention Holmes has found his baked goods in high demand – although he is yet to have a request for a baked resignation.

And if you’re curious, the preferred resignation flavour is carrot, with pecans, sultanas and coconut.
