HR error sees thousands show up for job meeting

Police were called in after a recruitment email went out to 61,000 job seekers.

It’s a tough time to be a jobseeker but the unemployed in Stockholm almost started a riot after a recruitment message went to 61,000 people.

Police had to be called in to disperse an angry crowd outside an employment office in Stockholm on Wednesday when thousands showed up for a recruitment meeting.

"Something has gone wrong with the mailing list...it has set off a very messy situation at the city office," said Clas Olsson, acting director of the employment office.

The email invitation to a recruitment meeting should have got to about 1,000 jobseekers. Instead it went to every registered job seeker in Stockholm – about 61,000 people.

Hundreds of people spilled out of the alleyway where the office is located, out onto a main thoroughfare. The office staff called police to try and control the situation.

"When we got there it was very crowded and there were some upset feelings," Police Inspector Ulf Lindgren told Reuters.

Olsson told the Aftonbladet newspaper he did not know if the cause was a human or technical error.

Sweden's total unemployment stood at 8.6 percent in January.
