Are you closing for the holidays?

How many people are in your office today? If you're open between Christmas and New Year you might be bucking a trend.

Many ogranizations will close over Christmas and New Year this year, but even those that don't will have skeleton staff as many workers take the time off.

An HRM reader poll found 46% of readers said their workplace was closing over Christmas and New Year, with 53% remaining open on the days between the statutory holidays.

The number of companies closing is higher than those in the US, according to a survey from Workforce Institute, which finds that a quarter of workplace will close during the holidays.

Even those employees whose workplaces are open may not be in with 40% planning to take Christmas Eve off.

"For many people, this period is less busy at work and so the 'catchup' consequences of taking time off are lighter," Joyce Maroney, director of the Workforce Institute, said. "People want to be home when kids are home from school or college, or they're looking forward to spending time with extended family and friends."

Maroney said there was a strong element pf employee engagement in giving works time off during the holidays.
