Thailand's incoming workforce eyeing remote work opportunities

Thailand's incoming workforce is increasingly interested in remote work, according to a new report. Employers are, therefore, being urged to lay down clear policies if they want to attract this new generation of talent.

The report from Universum, which surveyed more than 12,700 students across Thailand, revealed that 93% of the respondents expressed interest in remote working opportunities.

However, remote work can still have its setbacks, with employees claiming to be anxious about overextending themselves and impacting their work-life balance.

"In order to attract the best young talent in Thailand, employers need to communicate clear and attractive policies around remote working; staying quiet on the subject will be seen as a negative by digitally savvy talent starting their careers," said Mike Parsons, managing director APAC, Universum. "It is also clear that, in Thailand, employers need to communicate a strong value proposition that highlights the strengths of their culture and the softer side of the employment experience, including things like their commitment to DE&I."

Thailand is among the handful of nations that are willing to accommodate this emerging segment of remote employees, dubbed as digital nomads, by offering them a visa that will allow them to live and work in the country for 10 years.

Meanwhile, the incoming workforce is still mulling over competitive base salaries and benefits packages too. The report revealed that the most ideal employer among business students is Google, followed by Shopee, GMM Grammy, UNIQLO, and the Stock Exchange of Thailand.

For engineering students, the PTT, Google, Siam Cement Group, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, and the BMW Group emerged as the most ideal employers. For humanities/liberal arts/education students, Google, GMM Grammy, UNIQLO, LINE Corporation, and Workpoint Entertainment were named the most ideal.

For IT students, tech giants including Google, Microsoft, Facebook, LINE Corporation, and Intel were the most popular employers. For natural sciences students, the most ideal employers are Pfizer, PTT, Google, Siam Cement Group, and Bangkok Hospital.
