Navigating the “new normal”

Providing support to employees is critical at any time – but never more so than this period post- pandemic, says Sky Mehringer of TMF

Navigating the “new normal”

The COVID-19 pandemic has put HR professionals around the world in the spotlight, as businesses scrabble to create safe working environments in the face of an invisible foe. Some might argue that it’s not an enviable time to be working in the field, given the unique strains that have followed in the pandemic’s wake.

With that said, these unique stresses have also highlighted the important role that good HR professionals can play in stabilizing the workplace, and maintaining company culture in the face of adversity. Accordingly, TMF have assembled The HR Director’s guide to successfully navigating the post-pandemic ‘new normal’, which addresses nine of the most common issues currently facing HR professionals as the pivot to post-pandemic working gets underway.

For Sky Mehringer, Director, Consultancy Solutions at TMF, it’s been an opportunity to demonstrate both resilience and expertise, through aiding other businesses around the world.

“As you might imagine, we’ve received queries across the globe,” says Mehringer. “I won’t pretend it’s been an easy time for us, but it has been great seeing our work having such an impact so immediately.”

But the focus – particularly throughout Asia – is now starting to shift to what the post-pandemic workplace might look like. With COVID-19 now under control in a number of parts of the world, employers and employees alike are starting to wonder what the future holds.

The report notes that this has been a very serious conversation throughout the whole pandemic, but it’s picked up additional momentum now. There’s so many moving parts in play – do your employees feel safe returning to the workplace? If they do, is there adequate room to institute social distancing effectively? How has employee satisfaction and mental health been throughout this period?

There aren’t necessarily ‘right’ answers to a lot of these queries, notes Mehringer. However, there are best practices to abide by, and legislation which must be followed – and many HR staff are finding they’re not sure where they should start those process, which the report is designed to address.

“It’s designed to help you understand the HR and payroll changes happening now and, in the future, and how these changes can affect your business, particularly if you’re working across multiple countries,” says Mehringer.

The report also includes key questions that businesses need to be asking themselves, and practical suggestions for how change can be implemented in the office in a post-pandemic world – all drawing on TMF’s conversations with HR professionals and the company’s existing experience.

“Ultimately, we want to help employers and staff embrace the new world,” says Mehringer. “The outcomes are going to look slightly different for everyone, but they’re challenges that everyone is going to have to navigate. With resources like The HR Director’s guide, we want to be able to help that process.”
