New programme launched to boost hiring of youths with Special Educational Needs: report

The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) has launched a new programme that aims to boost employment outcomes for individuals with Special Educational Needs (SEN), according to reports.

Under the programme, SEN employees will receive 12 months of assistance, including job skills training and life planning counselling, to help them transition to the workforce, The Standard reported.

According to the report, employers participating in the programme will also receive consultancy services, job matching, and suggestions for workplace modification to support the integration of SEN youths.

Hiring SEN youths

The programme was launched as a new survey from the Youth Employment Network, which is under the HKFYG, found that many employers have never hired an SEN individual but are open to doing so.

The survey, which polled 102 Hong Kong organisations, found that 76.5% have never hired youths with SEN.

However, 74% are also saying they are willing to hire these individuals, citing their commendable work ethics and responsibilities, The Standard reported.

According to the employers, some initiatives to motivate them in hiring SEN individuals include government support, such as job matching and referral (26.2%), and subsidies (22.4%).
