In what may be the definitive sign of troubled times, a new US reality TV show will track the employees of struggling small businesses as they decide which one of their colleagues will be laid off.

This is absolutely appalling from an ethical perspective and incredibly risky for businesses to take part. I doubt there is a contract tight enough to protect businesses from being sued by the employees who are told that their 'tribe has spoken' and their 'time in the workplace is up' when it is done in such a public way. Not to mention the minefield of potential breaches of discrimination, defamation and privacy laws, dereliction of duty of care for employees, and potential pain and suffering.
I would be surprised if it gets up!
