Mature workforce excluded by discriminatory practices

Employers are continuing to use discriminatory practices to exclude aged applicants, according to a report by National Seniors Australia.

    I own and operate Australia's first and number one job board for mature age jobseekers called While age discrimination still exists, I am seeing more of an interest from employers wanting to know how they can tap into this growing and valuable talent pool and further support their diversity message. From my experience, recruiters are by far the worst offenders in this category, given their business model is largely driven by quantity rather than quality.
    We have thousands of experienced jobseekers registered on our site looking for employment yet recruiters are still reluctant to use specialist sites to fill their advertisements. Employers need to be informed of the resources out there in order to change inaccurate negative perceptions about this audience.

    I went onto your web site Heidi and its like being on 50 other web sites those jobs are not for us oldies, none of those employers will reply to my application.

    As the owner/operator of the only job board ( in Australia that is 100% jobs for older workers and doesn't have generic jobs advertised, we work with employers looking for experienced, older workers and many large organisations are very committed to employing this group of jobseekers. Anti-discrimination legislation is almost useless as most of the discrimination is very subtle. Instead of relying on the 'big stick'approach it would be a better strategy for the Federal Government to have a national campaign on the benefits of older workers. We have over 10,000 registered jobseekers, and many of them are very highly skilled who simply can't get past the interview stage once employers are aware of their age.
    Many organisations are only just starting to realise that the numbers of prime age candidates are no longer available, and by not considering older candidates, are restricting their applicant pool considerably. The time will come when employers will simply have to change the who and how they recruit

    I have found the only people who don't discriminate against older workers is the tertiary education sector incl. universities. They actually value the contribution experienced skilled staff make to the organisation.
    Most agencies are discriminating and when questioned say it is because the employer only wants younger people. As a regular recruiting employer I know that I have only been sent young candidates unless I specifically ask for older mature experienced candidates.
    Its a culture change that isn't being driven by the recruitment industry even though they have the power to do so.
    I was told last year by an employee of DEEWR (when I calld to ask why they don't employ older workers) that "older people don't understand reports and computers"! And that was our Workplace Relations government beggars belief really.
