Opportunity knocks: Learn adaptive leadership skills

The renowned Adaptive Leadership model from Harvard University will be featured at a two-day course in Sydney on 1-2 December, hosted by not-for-profit organisation,The Benevolent Society.

The acclaimed Adaptive Leadership model was developed by Professor Ronald Heifetz and Marty Linsky at The Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and is taught to practitioners each year through the Art & Practice of Leadership Development program in the US.

Australians Maxime Fern and Michael Johnstone (executive directors of Vantage Point Consulting) are lead facilitators of the program, and will work alongside senior Social Leadership Australia facilitators, Liz Skelton and Geoff Aigner to deliver the program next month.

Skelton, a senior manager at Social Leadership Australia, said the changing nature of business challenges requires a new approach, and indeed a range of skills that can’t be taught in traditional ways.

“If you are really interested in leadership development, you have got to go beyond traditional facilitation to understand and work with the dynamics at play,” Skelton said.

Adaptive Leadership for Practitioners will employ a mix of theory and practice and include learning in ‘real time’, with a particular focus on case-in-point methodology.

It will also explore: the constraints and opportunities in the role of authority; diagnosing ‘work avoidance’; working with factions; and collaborating across difference.

Skelton said, “Adaptive Leadership will take you to the edge of your current knowledge and capacity. Not only will you learn a new skill set, but you will also gain real clarity on where your blind spots are and discover what your own leadership development challenges are, as a practitioner.”
