Australia highlights benefits of hiring veterans in new campaign

The Australian government launched on Wednesday a new campaign that puts the spotlight on the benefits of hiring ex-service personnel.

Veterans' Affairs Minister Matt Keogh said the campaign will share the stories of five ex-service personnel who are now in professions that the public "might not expect."

"This campaign seeks to educate employers on the diversity of skills ex-service personnel can bring to the workplace and provide the necessary advice to make sure ex-service personnel are set up to thrive in the civilian workplace," Keogh said in a statement.

According to the minister, ex-service personnel can bring skills such as leadership, teamwork, agility, and the ability to work under pressure.

However, these veterans face the misconception that they are "broken" when they try applying for civilian workplaces.

"The Australian Defence Force is an incredible training ground for personnel, but when they leave service, many report having difficulty translating their skills from the ADF to the civilian workplace," Keogh said.

The national government launched the $24-million Veteran Employment Programme, which the latest campaign is also a part of, to address these issues.

The programme seeks to boost veteran employment opportunities and help businesses benefit from hiring veterans.
