The ACTU recently announced that unions would hold the biggest ever day of protest on 15 November. The protest will link up hundreds of separate locations across the country in a satellite broadcast using Sky Channel, and the ACTU expects hundreds of thousands of workers to participate. The protest will feature a briefing on the details of the Government’s industrial relations reforms that Workplace Minister Kevin Andrews has said will be tabled in Parliament by late October. Community rallies and marches will also take place on 15 November, in most cases following the national hook-up.

McDonalds recognised in employer awards

McDonald’s has taken out the Employer of the Year award in this year’s Victorian Training Awards. Sponsored by apprenticeship management services provider MAS National, the award was accepted by Catriona Noble, vice president – regional director, McDonald’s at a recent awards ceremony as part of TAFE week in Victoria. Noble said McDonald’s was proud to have been recognised by the training industry for its efforts to teach, train and develop staff. “Put simply, without the right people and the right skills training our business would not survive – it’s vital to the future of our group,” she said. MAS National is a leading New Apprenticeships Centre and provides business with support services for apprentices and trainees.

Leaders in workforce diversity recognised

The Diversity@work Awards recognise both individuals and organisations for their initiatives aimed to increase diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Independent panels of experts from a variety of corporate and academic backgrounds adjudicate the Awards. Awards will go to organisations with specific diversity initiatives relating to the employment and inclusion of people with a disability, indigenous Australians, mature age workers and culturally and linguistically diverse Australians.
