How to deal with employees with mental health issues

Workplace mental health is increasing in prevalence and profile. When dealing with an employee who is experiencing mental health issues, HR professionals need to take into account various legal, privacy and ethical considerations that come into play.

Legal experts will be discussing this complex topic at HRD’s upcoming Employment Law Masterclass, which is being held in four major cities across Australia soon.

Designed for HR managers, the program will cover how to handle disclosures of medical conditions, return to work, what is considered reasonable adjustment and return to work, and how to determine whether psychological conditions impact on performance.

Further in an interactive workshop, a workplace psychologist will guide delegates through the practicalities of conducting a performance discussion with an employee who has a mental health issues. This session will include practical tips for handling tough disciplinary conversations in a mental health context and how to minimise the risk of psychological harm during performance discussions.
