Five minutes with… Jane McKay, Senior HR Officer, VECCI

Jane McKay of VECCI chats to HC about good advice and the future of HR, sharing her insights on change management and diversity.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
The best advice I have been given was from my late Grandfather. He said that you should take every opportunity you are given and not take them for granted. He said that life is far too short and too quick.
What challenges do you think HR will face in the next 10 years?
There are no shortage of challenges for HR, in fact it is an exciting time to be in HR. Navigating the issues of compliance will remain an ongoing focus, however more importantly HR professionals will have an opportunity to significantly add value to organisations as we grapple with the idea of the future of work. Change management will become an integral part of our positions, as we seek to bring our employees on a journey towards a culture that is characterised by collaboration and promotes increased productivity, efficiency, flexibility and greater engagement.
What is the most interesting aspect of your role?
The most interesting aspect of my role is working within such a diverse and meaningful organisation. As Victoria’s largest and most influential employer group, at VECCI you are consistently challenged and inspired by the dedicated business experts that surround you and their commitment to leading businesses into the future through practical advice, training and networking opportunities. We have a very committed and friendly group of people at VECCI and I thoroughly enjoy interacting at all different levels of the business, to help each business unit achieve tangible outcomes.
What do you feel is your biggest professional achievement to date?
It has been a very fulfilling experience taking on the Senior position at VECCI, to become more involved in the strategic elements of HR and to partner more closely with the Senior Management group to help them achieve business objectives.
How would you sum up HR professionals in two words?
People managers.
