Decisions must have 'purpose and power', says Australian HR Award winner

The Managing Director of an award-winning medical firm says decisions on inclusion and community need to be conscious ones and not ones “just for commerciality.”

“We make mistakes and decisions aren’t always going to be welcome – it happens in families, in friendships, and in business. But it’s about being conscious and always striving to do the best for the sake of the people you employ,” Glenn Young, Managing Director of Zeep, told HRD.

“You can’t make arbitrary decisions. Everything must have power and purpose – that’s how you become an employer of choice.”

The firm won the Employee of Choice (1-99 employees) award at the 2024 Australian HR Awards – something Young said was “unexpected.”

“Being seen as the ‘employer’s employer’ is amazing, really. It’s testament to the team. The great thing about the awards is it raises the profile of the amazing work our employees do internally. It was great to recognise the teams in attendance.”

The black-tie gala, held at The Fullerton Hotel Sydney in September, celebrates the best in show for HR professionals over the last year – showcasing the ‘upper echelon’ of practitioners across several metrics, including Best Health and Wellbeing Program, Australian HR Champion, and Best Use of Technology.

Young noted that having a people-focused approach is paramount in ensuring the best for your team.

“We see our onboarding as more than just a process but instilling a mindset into our teams. What we do isn’t easy – but to be recognised as doing the right thing for those that work for us is truly humbling and a great honour,” he said.

This is a sentiment echoed by last year’s winner of the Best Health and Wellbeing Program at the Australian HR Awards – City of Parramatta Council.

HRD caught up with the council’s chief executive, Gail Connolly PSM, who said being recognised for their work was a huge honour.

“The prestigious awards ceremony collects some of Australia’s leading organisations across both private and public sectors in one room. The award was for our team and was a great testament to our hardworking and dedicated staff working behind the scenes.”
