How to lure reluctant employees back into the office

After working surrounded by the comforts of home for two years, it’s easy to understand why some employees are reluctant to give it up.

An HRD Power Panel including Carolyn Beyer, head of HR at Microsoft Canada, Tonya Lauderdale, head of HR at Risk Placement Services, and Tricia Robinson, managing director at Accenture discuss with host, HRDs Kevin Singel, how they are managing employee reluctance to return to the office.

Carolyn Beyer, head of HR, Microsoft

Microsoft has declared to their workforce that they’re going to be in a hybrid environment that ultimately supports flexibility.

“However,” added Beyer, “there’s going to be times that meeting at the office is important.”

So, Microsoft is focusing on making sure the employee experience when employees are in the office is so good, they’ll keep wanting to come back for more.

“We’re focused on creating those moments that matter so that people will ultimately want to choose to be there when it works and where they can work most effectively.”

Tonya Lauderdale, head of HR, Risk Placement Services

Risk Placement Services is focusing training on what the best place to do certain types of work is and asking leaders to set clear expectations up front.

“If we're able to set those clear expectations up front, have them be fair and consistent across the organization, if why you need to be in the office is based on a business reason because that's where the work is most productively done then that's a case where that's a requirement of the role.”

Tricia Robinson, managing director, Accenture

With the incredible need for talent right now, Accenture is focused on retaining their current employees through mobility and making sure employees feel valued.

“There's a lot of open demand for talent right now so we want to make sure that we're retaining the people that we have that already fit in our culture and meet our needs so we're looking at how we enable more flexibility across the organisation.”
