DHL hiring as ecommerce division booms

The ecommerce division of logistics group DHL is poised to increase its workforce in Malaysia. The company posted triple-digit revenue growth amid the ecommerce boom in the region.

From an estimated 90,000 parcels a day, DHL forecasts it will process about 200,000 a day by next year. It aims to boost operational capacity by hiring more employees and automating a central hub.

“To deal with the changing market dynamics and keep pace with the expansion, we are actively recruiting with plans to increase our workforce by more than 60% by end 2021,” said Anil Gautam, managing director of DHL eCommerce Solutions Malaysia.

“We see massive opportunities in the Klang Valley region but are equally witnessing heightened activities in East Malaysia as online spending increases.”

The increase in headcount in the next six months is intended to support plans to open a dozen more depots specifically for processing online orders. This brings the total number to 57 depots before 2021 ends – a surge of 42.5% from the 40 depots operating in 2019.

“I’m confident that these investments into our people, technology and network will position us well for the booming Internet economy that is driven by a fast-growing, engaged, young and mobile-first wave of consumers,” Gautam said.

Overall, the ecommerce sector in Malaysia is expected to grow at 24.7% in 2020 and reach US$12.6bn by 2024, predicts Kiattichai Pitpreecha, CEO of DHL eCommerce Solutions Southeast Asia.

“This growth will only accelerate post-pandemic as businesses, small and large, move and scale online, and online shopping becomes increasingly second-nature to consumers.

“We’re bolstering our network of depots across the country and investing in automation and digitalization to increase capacity, enhance efficiency and provide a seamless customer experience,” Pitpreecha said.
