Major hiring push comes as the company aims to add 900 new restaurants by 2027
McDonald's is opening its doors to 375,000 new employees this summer in one of its biggest hiring pushes in recent years.
The massive hiring push comes as it gears up for more customers over the summer months, according to McDonald's.
It also comes as the company aims to add 900 new restaurants in the United States by 2027.
McDonald's is one of the biggest employers in the US, with one in eight Americans estimated to have worked for a restaurant at some point in their lives.
However, the company also struggles with a 100% turnover rate worldwide, according to Dave Burchfield, McDonald's former global people strategy director, in a previous interview with HRD.
"That's what a lot of people don't realise. So if we can hold on to just 10% of that number, whether that's promoting people directly or having them come back after a career break, that's amazing for us," Burchfield previously told HRD.
One of the company's biggest measures to retain staff is through its Archways to Opportunity Programme, which marked its 10th anniversary this week.
The programme provides McDonald's restaurant employees the resources to create a pathway to advancement both within the company and beyond.
In its latest poll among former and current Archways participants, three out of four said they stayed at McDonald's longer because of the programme. Among the benefits they cited were:
According to the poll, 46% of Archways participants who earned a college degree were also first-generation college students.
"I'm so proud of McDonald's franchisees for investing in restaurant crew, the success of our Archways to Opportunity programme and our unrelenting focus on creating opportunities for everyone to succeed because that's when the Golden Arches truly shine the brightest," said McDonald's USA CEO Joe Erlinger in a statement on LinkedIn.
Erlinger was also present to announce the company's biggest hiring push at a local McDonald's in Columbus, Ohio, where he met with US Labour Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.
"The Secretary and I are each committed to creating opportunity for the American workforce, opportunities that build momentum in the job market, and upskill individuals to achieve their full potential," Erlinger said.
"Here's to welcoming more crew members to the McFamily and cheers to ten remarkable years of breaking down barriers and building up dreams – and to the many more opportunities that lie ahead."
McDonald's massive hiring push comes as the US unemployment rate remained at 4.2% in April 2025, with the number of unemployed people at 7.2 million, according to data from the Bureau of Labour Statistics.
The long-term unemployed, or those who are jobless for 27 weeks or more, increased by 179,000 to 1.7 million. They accounted for 23.5% of all unemployed people.
