‘The right thing to do’: Greater Wellington now a Living Wage Employer

Greater Wellington has joined a slew of other Aotearoa New Zealand companies by becoming an accredited Living Wage Employer.

This achievement means the organisation has met the criteria by paying the employees the living wage, while maintaining positive working conditions.

Greater Wellington is now the second public transport authority in Aotearoa New Zealand to commit to the Living Wage, following Environment Canterbury.

It joins other government-operated entities in the Wellington region, such as Wellington City Council, Porirua City Council, Hutt City Council, and Kāpiti Coast District Council as accredited Living Wage Employers.

There are now over 400 Living Wage Employers across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Greater Wellington’s CEO, Nigel Corry, said the decision to adopt the Living Wage was “the right thing to do.”

“As a council we are committed to improving the living and working conditions of some of the lowest paid people in our community,” Corry said.

“Living Wage is now embedded in our procurement processes, and I want to acknowledge the significance of this milestone that was endorsed by the outgoing council of the last triennium.”

According to Living Wage Employer program lead, Felicia Scherrer, Greater Welling is “setting an example” for workplace positivity across the country and the accreditation is “another step towards a fairer Aotearoa”.

“Greater Wellington is setting an example of what local leadership looks like – fairness, dignity and respect for all workers. When workers are paid fairly, families thrive and communities grow stronger,” Scherrer said.
