ACCC, WorkSafe NSW warn on asbestos tiles

Importers and retailers of stone tiles have been warned they may unwittingly be stocking asbestos tiles.

Importers and retailers of stone tiles have been warned they may unwittingly be stocking asbestos tiles.

Tiles which have been imported from China and sold under the brand name "Snow White" may contain Tremolite asbestos, according to WorkCover NSW.

WorkCover has asked businesses that suspect they may have such tiles to inform it. To confirm materials, businesses have been advised to have samples tested at a nationally accredited facility.

Tiles found to contain asbestos must be disposed of in leak-proof containers at an approved asbestos waste disposal facility, it added.

The ACCC this week said it believed most of the tiles had now been removed, however it was working with the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service and other WorkCover authorities to identify further supplies.
