Productivity down, burn-out up - can HR digitise its way out?

Productivity down, burn-out up - can HR digitise its way out?

This article was created in partnership with Auto-UX.

As we inch closer to 2026, organisations and leadership teams are wrestling with a grim economic outlook, team burnout and stagnating productivity.

Speaking to HRD, Greg Parkes, CEO of Auto-UX, explained that HR teams are now facing two colliding realities: increased pressure on 'doing more with less', and asking an exhausted employee base that is buckling under our cost-of-living crisis to work longer and harder, with no additional reward.

"As we approach mid-December, Boards have a pessimistic outlook for economic growth in 2026, and that puts incredible pressure on HR departments to spend less and achieve more. Simultaneously, employees have endured 12 months of extreme cost-of-living pressure. They're struggling,trying to make ends meet, they're tired and they're burnt out. Employees are desperate for financial relief, and HR knows that financial stress is a handbrake for employee productivity, but they have limited resources to address the problem."

One way to help address the dual issues of employee financial wellbeing and organisational productivity, Parkes believes, is to digitise novated leasing benefits.

"By adopting AI-powered, digital solutions that deliver significant financial relief for employees whilst simultaneously reducing company administration and overheads, HR can achieve the seemingly impossible task of doing more with less. Of increasing employee wellbeing and in turn productivity, while streamlining operations."

Addressing the 'Dark Ages' Dilemma

While the financial benefits for employees are well-known (Parkes says employees save an average of $8,500 per year on the Auto-UX program), the delivery, management and employee experience of novated leasing has left a lot to be desired. This is where the new age of novated leasing comes into play. What was once an outdated and archaic system has been revolutionised into a seamless and digitszed tool by Parkes and his team of experts - taking it from a pain point for HR into a high value and fun benefit.

“Novated leasing has traditionally been a complex and high-friction process for HR and Payroll, and still is,” added Parkes. “This challenge stems from an industry that has remained stuck in the dark ages, failing to adopt modern, digital technology.”

This inability to evolve has created two issues for HR:

  1. Unnecessary Paperwork: Traditional models rely on archaic, clunky, and paper-based processes. This pushes a disproportionate amount of manual work onto HR and Payroll, turning a powerful benefit into a compliance and administration nightmare.
  2. Zero/Low Visibility: HR spends time implementing the scheme but gets little to no intelligent data in return. Without visibility into adoption rates or employee savings, it’s impossible for HR leaders to properly measure the program’s ROI or prove its value to the business.

“The employee experience was equally poor,” Parkes told HRD. “The process was confusing, slow, and non-transparent, often requiring employees to waste time calling a consultant just to get a quote - think call centres in the 90s.”

With Auto-UX’s self-service platform - Auto-Pilot - employees are treated to a seamless, enjoyable experience instead of a pushy and intimidating sales talk.

Achieving Low-Touch Administration and High Employee Engagement

“We transform novated leasing by fully digitising the entire process, providing instant clarity  - and savings - for employees and delivering low-touch administration for HR,” added Parkes.

These advantages include;

  • Total Transparency: Employees can see all costs upfront, something that was traditionally hidden. We also proactively remove 'junk insurance' and other unnecessary friction points.
  • 24/7 Self-Service: Employees can instantly build quotes, compare vehicles, and submit applications on any device, any time. This makes  call centre frustrations a thing of the past.
  • HR-Friendly Automation: The self-service design is easy to implement and maintain, creating a true low-touch experience that removes the admin load from HR. Our Engage Assist feature gives HR leaders administration-free reporting and performance metrics, finally delivering the data they need to showcase the program’s real value.

And the results are already speaking for themselves, with Parkes adding that the feedback from HR teams has been “overwhelmingly positive”.

“The most significant, consistent result is the dramatic reduction in internal employee enquiries - HR and Payroll teams are no longer swamped with calls and emails about the leasing process,” explained Parkes. “This  is allowing HR to pivot towards more strategic HR priorities.”

The results are compelling;

  • Faster Process: Our platform reduces the Quote-to-Application Time from multiple days to a single, seamless digital journey, eliminating delays and awkwardness for both the employee and HR.
  • Higher Engagement: By offering an easy-to-understand and accessible benefit, clients report higher overall adoption rates and satisfaction levels compared to traditional, opaque schemes.
  • Increased Productivity: Employees that are financially stressed lose 7hrs of productivity per week. Delivering a $8,500 annual saving through novated leasing has a tangible impact on increasing financial wellbeing and output.
  • Zero Admin Impact at Scale: The Engage Assist feature gives HR teams concrete data on total employee savings and engagement, providing irrefutable evidence of the program's value.

For example, NHP, a leading industrial technology partner, transitioned from an entirely manual system to Auto-UX.

“We’re seeing that there’s a much higher level of interest and engagement in novated leasing - because the confidence is coming back in the service,” added Mark Skerritt, former CHRO at NHP Electrical Engineering.

Their HR leadership noted that the implementation had virtually no impact on administrative workload, allowing NHP to scale the benefit to more employees with no additional, time-consuming admin work for their payroll and HR teams.
