How to hire the best talent in a post-COVID economy

Hiring and retaining talent has been one of the HR industry’s biggest challenges in 2022 – but according to Indeed, the right strategies and tactics can go a long way towards making the right hire.

From the Great Resignation to a shortage of skilled migrants, there is no doubt that Australia’s labour market is tight. Indeed’s APAC senior economist Callam Pickering says that attracting the right people to open roles has become more of a challenge post-COVID, and companies are having to go the extra mile to find and retain the right people.

In this environment, Pickering notes that having strong insights into the jobseeker market is vital. Knowing how to expand your talent pool is also a helpful strategy, as there are many “pockets of underutilized talent” in Australia that companies have yet to discover.

“It’s no surprise that COVID-19 has disrupted the Australian labour market and employers’ ability to find talent,” Pickering says.

“From the lowest unemployment rate we’ve seen in decades, to skilled migration being a fraction of what it was pre-COVID, and speculation of the Great Resignation, businesses are having to work harder than ever before to attract, and retain, great candidates.

“Understanding the current state of Australia’s economy and labour market can play a significant role in helping employers be better prepared to find, and retain, top talent,” he explains.

“Insights into what job seekers are looking for from their next employer, to what motivates their current employees to want to look for a new job, can help the HR sector ensure their workplace is an environment where candidates can see themselves working long-term.”

Pickering will be sharing a number of actionable insights in his webinar, ‘Everything You Need To Know About Hiring in a Post-COVID Economy’. He will discuss how Australia’s tightening labour market has impacted business, and share how companies can expand their existing talent pool to find, attract and retain candidates into their open roles.

“Expanding your talent pool will be an important tool to help you fill your open roles quicker,” Pickering says.

“In this webinar, we will share pockets of underutilised talent right here in Australia that many organisations are overlooking, but could open doors to talent you might never have considered before.”

The webinar will go live at 11am AEST, and the session will conclude with a Q&A moderated by Rachael Townsley, Indeed Australia’s marketing director.
