Cathay Pacific sets crew deadline for COVID jab

Cathay Pacific has instructed aircrew to either have the COVID-19 vaccine – or risk loosing their jobs. Speaking last week, the airline wants all Hong Kong-based flight attendants and pilots to get jabbed by August 31st.

In a statement reported by Reuters, Cathay Pacific acknowledged that there would be some exceptions made for employees who can’t take the vaccine for medical reasons- however, their future employment would be assessed.

"We understand there will be some who cannot take a vaccine and we will look into accommodating them on a short-term basis where we can," the statement read. "However, we will review the future employment of those who are unable to become vaccinated and assess whether they can continue to be employed as aircrew with Cathay Pacific."

Earlier this month, Cathay Pacific announced that they were looking to hire more pilots in HK.

“As we look to the future it is critically important that we keep our crew resource levels right, plan appropriately for the recovery and future growth to our network, and look forward to increasing demand as we welcome back more of our customers,” added Chris Kempis, Cathay’s director of flight operations.

“Recruitment at this stage is about forward planning and as we move through the summer, we are already seeing small, but definite growth in our passenger schedules,” Kempis said. The company also said it has “determined that now is the time to recommence our recruitment and training activities.”
