Singapore Airlines to create new roles for retrenched Jetstar staff

The Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group is opening 300 new roles to the retrenched employees of Jetstar Asia airline, according to reports.

A spokesperson for the SIA told local media that it is creating 100 new positions for pilots and 200 roles for cabin crew.

"Our aim is to support as many affected staff as possible in continuing their careers within the aviation sector," the SIA spokesperson told Channel News Asia in a statement.

Representatives from SIA and Scoot, a low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, will also be heading to Jetstar Asia's office from June 17 to 19 to meet interested employees, The Straits Times reported.

"We understand that this is a time of uncertainty, and are committed to providing the necessary support to help make the recruitment and onboarding process as smooth as possible," the spokesperson said as quoted by the news outlet.

"We appreciate the experience that Jetstar Asia employees bring, and we look forward to welcoming the successful candidates into the SIA Group."

Jetstar Asia is retrenching more than 500 employees in Singapore as it closes on July 31, with SIA saying it has been working with Jetstar since its closure was announced.

Affected employees at Jetstar will be getting a bonus payment for the financial year 2025, a special thank you payment, as well as continued access to staff travel benefits for a period equivalent to their tenure.

Ng Chee Meng, secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress, also said they are offering job placement and career advisory support to affected Jetstar employees.
