'The Co-Worker': IKEA hiring virtual staff for upcoming Roblox game

IKEA is hiring 10 people to work as virtual employees in its upcoming game, "The Co-Worker," opening on June 24 on Roblox.

In a media release, the furniture giant said the game will introduce users to its approach to careers, where "non-linear career journeys are the norm and lateral moves across departments are commonplace."

"Our co-workers are able to change roles, switch departments, and grow in any direction they choose, both in the game or in the real world," said Darren Taylor, country people and culture manager, IKEA UK and Ireland, in a statement.

The open positions are on a fully remote and flexible basis, with accepted applicants to be paid an hourly rate of £13.15/€14.80.

"We're excited to launch paid work on Roblox to showcase how we do careers differently, bringing our unique careers philosophy to life," Taylor said. "There are many ways to learn and grow at IKEA, and that's what IKEA on Roblox is all about."

IKEA's application process

Applications for the open positions are accepted until June 16, but the roles are only limited to those in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Part of the recruitment process is an online application form with questions such as: "How do you feel about being turned into pixels?" and "If you were a pixelated IKEA furniture, which one would you be and why?"

Virtual interviews for shortlisted applicants will take place between June 14 and June 18, according to IKEA.

Among the duties of the accepted applicants include working in different sections of the store, such as the Showroom and Bistro, helping people choose their furniture, and serving meatballs.

"This is not the typical IKEA job. Candidates will be recruited to work inside our newest store, located on the gaming platform Roblox, getting a taste of what careers are like in a real-life IKEA," it said on the game's website.
