Amazon to phase out local fulfilment in Singapore

Amazon cuts 'small number of roles' amid business goal change

Amazon is eliminating a "small number of roles" in its Singapore operations as the e-commerce giant phases out its local grocery fulfilment to focus on international shipments.

The organisation did not disclose the exact number of roles that will be impacted, but The Straits Times reported it will affect fewer than 10% of the company's 2,500 total workforce in Singapore.

"We're working closely with affected employees, including helping them find new roles within Amazon wherever possible," Amazon said in a note on Thursday.

"For those who are unable to find a new role or choose not to pursue one, we are offering transition support including severance payments and career transition services."

Despite the change, the company maintained its commitment to Singapore and its employees.

"Amazon remains deeply committed to Singapore and our investments across our retail, Global Selling, entertainment, devices, and AWS business lines, employing 2,500 people in the country," it said.

Amazon's shift in focus

Amazon's job cuts follow the phase out of its local fulfilment in Singapore, which includes Amazon Fresh and grocery partners.

"We're working to transition our vendors and sellers to alternative ways to continue to serve Singapore customers where possible," the organisation said.

"We'll continue to offer a wide selection of everyday essentials, including products across health and personal care, apparel, home, kitchen, and more."

The change comes amid strong demand for products from international stores.

"We're seeing strong demand for products from international stores, and we're responding by increasing our investment in what customers tell us they want most: great value selection from around the world with fast, reliable delivery," said Peter Li, Amazon Singapore Country Manager, in a statement.

Layoff notice to authorities

Meanwhile, the Singapore Manual and Mercantile Workers' Union said Amazon Asia-Pacific, a non-unionised firm, has informed them of the job cuts a day in advance, The Straits Times reported.

In the same report, the Taskforce for Responsible Retrenchment and Employment Facilitation also noted that Amazon has provided employees with a two-month notice.

The Economic Development Board also said that it is working with Amazon, Workforce Singapore and NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) to support affected employees.

The SMMWU also noted that it is open for impacted Amazon employees who will require assistance.
