New report calls for proactive measures from employers to support employees
The lack of communication between employers and employees is driving women in Hong Kong to continue reporting to work despite experiencing symptoms of menopause, according to a new report.
The findings, released by The Menopause Space, showed a clear demand from employees for employer-led initiatives that support women experiencing menopause symptoms.
"The findings demonstrate a substantial demand for proactive support from employers," the report stated. "Addressing these needs can lead to a more supportive, inclusive, and productive work environment for all."
Impact of menopause at work
The demand comes as 83% of women reported that their perimenopause or menopause symptoms impact their day-to-day work life. The most bothersome symptoms include:
- Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM)
- Mood disorders (including anxiety, irritability, and brain fog)
- Joint and muscle pain
- Physical and mental exhaustion
- Sleep disruption
Despite experiencing these symptoms, 73% of employees said they had not taken any sick days in the past year, leading to a strong case of presenteeism in workplaces.
Discussing menopause with management emerged as the biggest barrier (48%) between employer and employees, with some of them saying they do not feel comfortable raising the topic with their manager (29%).
"While most continue to work through these challenges without taking sick leave, there is a strong reluctance or discomfort in discussing the issue with managers," the report stated.
Addressing menopause at work
The findings underscore the need for organisations to be proactive in offering support for women experiencing menopause symptoms at work.
According to the findings, access to a menopause expert who can provide direct consultation is the most sought-after form of support. Other measures that employees want include:
- Menopause awareness education
- Support and informed leadership
- Flexible working arrangements
- A menopause policy to standardise support and accommodations
"By proactively implementing the requested support structures, companies can foster a more inclusive environment, improve employee well-being, and enhance productivity," the report stated.
