Nike's HR chief admits failure to promote diversity

Nike’s HR chief has issued an internal memo to employees, which allegedly admits to having “failed to gain traction” in hiring minorities and women.

HR leader Monique Matheson detailed the brand’s struggles with promoting diversely, according to the memo – which was reviewed by CNBC.

"While we've spoken about this many times, and tried different ways to achieve change, we have failed to gain traction – and our hiring and promotion decisions are not changing senior-level representation as quickly as we have wanted," the memo reportedly reads.

The memo comes weeks after Jayme Martin, former general manager of global categories, resigned amidst allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

As it stands, 29% of Nike’s VPs are women, whilst just 16% are not white. Nike currently employees over 74,000 staff worldwide.

As part of the plan, Nike wants to “to create a culture of true inclusion”, whilst also improving representation of “women and people of colour”.
