HR News in Brief: California dominates wage growth; More Americans think it's job seeking time

Plus, the government releases a new resource for finding diverse workers while at the same time being criticized for a homogenous workforce

One in three Americans thinks it’s a good time to job hunt
A Gallup poll indicates 28% of Americans say now is a good time to find a quality job, up from the 2010 and 2012 lows of 8% but not as high as 2007’s 48%. However, younger residents feel much more positive, with nearly half agreeing that the job market is good, while only one in five of those over 50 feel the same way.

New resource to find diverse workers
To encourage its contractors to use workers with disabilities and military experience, the federal government has launched a new resource. The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs has made its Disability and Veterans Community Resources Directory available to the public.

California dominates highest average wage growth
Three counties in and around San Francisco made the top five US locations on a Bureau of Labor Statistics list of average weekly wages. San Mateo, a county south of San Francisco that includes part of Silicon Valley, was also the area with the highest year-over-year wage growth, at 9.9%.

Government needs younger workers, report says
The federal government has been criticized for a lack of age diversity in its workforce. A Partnership for Public Service report this month noted that employees under the age of 30 comprise 8.5% of the federal workforce, while across the US, that figure is 23.2%. That number stands despite one in four college students ranking government work as one of their top three target industries for jobs after graduation.

Executive compensation changes for Wynn Resorts
Las Vegas-based Wynn Resorts has drastically changed the way it compensates its CEO and founder Steve Wynn. According to the company’s SEC filing, his base salary will shrink from $4million to $2.5million this year, and will now have to pay his own annual rent of $525,000 for the company villa. Last year, his total compensation was $19.6million.
