Major boost for retail jobs as new development opens early

A major new supermarket development in Auckland will open earlier than expected, triggering a major recruitment drive fill an expected 120 jobs.

Foodstuffs North Island, a co-operative of local grocers, announced earlier this month that development of its new New World Point Chevalier supermarket is ahead of schedule will open on September 9.

According to the company the new store is expected to create 120 jobs and the development represents a $73 million investment in Point Chevalier. It includes retail space, 105 car parks, six team member checkouts, and eight self-scan checkouts.

The New Zealand Herald reports advertising of leadership and specialist roles will start in the coming weeks and will continue in a phased approach for supervisor roles and general staff positions in the coming months.

Rachel Cusk, Foodstuffs recruitment specialist, told the Herald job seekers included students, parents rejoining the workforce, as well as experienced professionals.

"I read thousands of job applications and the best ones show the candidate's soft skills, so you get a feel for their personality," Cusk told the Herald. "Finding out what they like to do outside of work and how they interact with people can make a CV memorable."

New Zealand has been seeing positive momentum when it comes to job ads since March, with the retail industry standing out in April following a 10% jump in job postings, according to SEEK NZ.

By region, Auckland also saw a three per cent hike in job ads in April, driving the national increase in ad volume along with Waikato (4%).
