Auckland leads filled jobs growth in November

Auckland in November 2023 added more than 30,000 in the number of jobs filled from a year earlier, leading the workforce boost across New Zealand.

Stats NZ data unveiled on Wednesday revealed that Auckland filled 30,176 jobs in November 2023, up 3.8% from the filled jobs in November 2022.

This makes Auckland the region with the largest increase in filled jobs during the period. Other regions added:

  • Canterbury (7,846 jobs, up 2.5%)
  • Waikato (4,808 jobs, up 2.1%)
  • Bay of Plenty (4,655 jobs, up 3.2%)
  • Wellington (3,620 jobs, up 1.4%)

By sector, the health care and social assistance sector in filled 14,430 jobs, up 5.5% from November 2022. For other sectors, they recorded:

  • Public administration and safety (10,786 jobs, up 7%)
  • Transport, postal, and warehousing (7,077 jobs, up 7.6%)
  • Accommodation and food services (6,389 jobs, up 4.1%)
  • Education and training (6,331 jobs, up 3.1%)

Employment by gender, age

By gender, the number of filled jobs went up 2.4% (27,847 jobs) for men and 1.7% (20,241 jobs) for women, according to Stats NZ.

By age, the group that had the biggest increase was those between 35 and 39 years old, adding 23,161 jobs, up 9.3% from November 2022. For other age groups, the increases were:

  • 30-34 years (19,603 jobs, up 7%)
  • 40-44 years (16,215 jobs, up 7.1%)
  • 15-19 years (12,528 jobs, down 8%)
  • 65+ years (7,297 jobs, up 6%)

Meanwhile, Stats NZ data showed that all industries added 1,324 jobs in November 2023, up 0.1% from October 2023, to hit 2.39 million filled jobs.

The goods-producing industry contributed the most by adding 969 jobs, up 0.2% from the previous month. Other industries recorded:

  • Primary industry (412 jobs, up 0.4%)
  • Service industries (118 jobs, flat)
