Total repaid amount to current and former staff reaches $663 million
Health New Zealand has repaid a combined $10.6 million to thousands of current employees in Hawke's Bay and South Canterbury as part of its Holidays Act remediation payments.
In a statement, Health NZ said it repaid $9.6 million to over 2,100 current employees in Hawke's Bay on Thursday.
Another $1 million was repaid to more than 600 current employees in South Canterbury on Friday.
The payments are part of the agency's Holidays Act Remediation Programme, which aims to repay 90,000 current and 130,000 former Health NZ employees who were incorrectly paid as a result of Holidays Act 2003 compliance issues.
The payments to Hawke's Bay and South Canterbury employees have increased the total amount repaid to current and former staff to $663 million, according to Health NZ.
Repayments for current employees in MidCentral, Lakes, and Whanganui are set for 2026, its website shows.
Meanwhile, repayment for former employees started last month, with further remediation efforts underway and expected to be carried out next year.
"Payments will be released in stages over the next 12 to 18 months," Health NZ said in a statement.
