Domino's operator banned from employing migrants after visa breaches

The franchise operator of two Domino's stores in New Zealand has been barred from employing additional migrant workers for a year after immigration breaches.

GBN Trading LTD, trading as Domino's Pukekohe and Domino's Pokeno, is also ordered to pay a total of NZD4,500 for challenging an infringement notice that it received.

According to Immigration NZ, the infringement notice was issued to GBN after an investigation revealed that an employee was working for the operator's Domino's Pōkeno in Waikato, despite their visa conditions only allowing them to work at Domino's Pukekohe in Auckland.

"The employer knowingly employed someone in a way that did not meet the conditions specified on their work visa and now they must face the consequences," said Jason Perry, National Manager, Investigations, in a statement.

GBN Trading LTD was ordered to pay a NZ$3,000 fine, as well as prosecution costs of NZ$1,500.

"This shows that immigration breaches are taken seriously," Perry said.

"Employers must follow their obligations, and if they don't, our immigration infringement scheme has proven to be an effective tool in holding them to account."

Immigration New Zealand's infringement scheme, introduced in April 2024, allows for the issuance of infringement notices to employers who commit lower-level immigration offences.

In the financial year 2024/25, Immigration NZ issued 121 infringement notices to 118 employers, worth a total of NZ$395,000, according to its website.
