HR professionals from across the country turned out wearing their finest last night to celebrate the industry at the HRINZ HR Awards 2013 – but who were the winners of the night?
Dressed to the nines, HR professionals from across the country descended on Wellington's Massey University last night for the 2013 HRINZ HR Awards.
The event, which recognises and showcases the work of New Zealand's HR community, saw a diverse group of HR professionals claim awards – but there were two standout winners who, between them, walked away with five of the eight awards.
NZ Police hauled in two accolades, taking out the Special Recognition Awards of State Services Commission Public Sector Award and the SilkRoad HR Technology Award.
The Public Sector Award recognises excellence and commitment to improving HR within a public sector environment. The NZ Police's HR teams work into the development of talent was highlighted by the award, and upon accepting the award Acting NZ Police Commissioner Viv Rickard said their work was essential in helping change the culture of the organisation.
“The development of talent and developing our leadership is critical in order to change the way we do things so I'm thankful for the people who have done the work with me,” he said.
NZ Police followed up with the award for Technology, which acknowledges the commitment to HR technology to improve business outcomes and enhance the employee experience. The win came as a surprise to NZ Police.
Apologising to his team, Rickards said he felt a “couple of others” in the category should have got the award. While he said felt like “a bit of a fraud” accepting the award, he was grateful for the acknowledgement.
“The calibre of talent has always been stunning and we're thrilled to be able to recognise the talent and organisations that we do.”

Lloyd Pinder, General Manager HR, Learning and Development, Mitre 10 NZ, was the other big winner of the night taking out the HR Generalist of the Year award and was named HR Person of the Year.
Pinder, who has 16 years international experience, was recognised for his “outstanding contribution” to the industry. He said there were three key things to his success, having a great team, CEO support and the opportunity to work with and for great leaders.
“One piece of advice I'd pass on... is really looking for and taking the strengths of each person you work with because everyone has something that is really quite extraordinary,” he said.
Mitre 10 also won the the Christian Dahmen Memorial Award for HR Innovation of the Year. Despite the success, Pinder is hoping even better results next year.
“I can tell you know we will be back next year and we've got some fantastic programs we are working on and we will be looking to do better next year,” he said.
Another big winner of the night was Chloye Chen, National HR Manager Transpacific Industries Group, who was awarded Emerging HR Leader of the Year.
HRINZ National President, Rachel Walker, said the evening was a “wonderful opportunity” for the profession to celebrate, and highlighted the achievements of those in the industry.
“The calibre of talent has always been stunning and we're thrilled to be able to recognise the talent and organisations that we do,” she said.

This year there was no award handed out for Specialist HR of the Year.
