HR teams are juggling huge volumes of applications and a surge in fake candidates and qualifications
AI has upended recruiting norms, bringing both opportunities and challenges.
Technology has made applying for jobs easier than ever before, but along with record job application volumes have come misrepresentation and fraud that didn't exist at this scale pre-AI.
According to recruitment platform Greenhouse, job applications have increased 239% for its users since the launch of ChatGPT, with the average recruiter now handling three times as many applications as they did four years ago.
"Our research found that 31% of Gen Z candidates now rely on AI to mass-apply to roles," Chait said.
"Unfortunately, many of these are spammy and low-quality. This tidal wave of applications means that many qualified candidates are being overlooked amid the noise and 'AI slop',” he said.
“While it's easier than ever to submit an application, landing a job has never felt harder. The frustration is real on both sides: candidates are left demoralized, recruiters are overwhelmed, and intent gets lost in the noise."
Greenhouse is trying to cut through the chaos on both sides of the hiring process with tools that streamline candidate sourcing, improve recruiting workflows, and provide teams with data-driven insights for better hiring decisions.
In early 2026, the company will launch Greenhouse Real Talent in Australia – an AI-powered scoring, spam and fraud detection tool that sits within the hiring platform's existing workflow.
Chait describes it as able “to fight fraud at scale," allowing businesses to identify quality applicants without adding friction to the candidate experience.
The company is also about to launch a new integration with SEEK that will allow job seekers to apply using their SEEK profile through "Apply with SEEK," while employers can advertise on the Asia-Pacific job board through "Ad Sync" without additional effort from hiring teams.
Greenhouse’s "Dream Job" feature was recently named one of Time's Best Inventions of 2025. The tool allows job seekers using MyGreenhouse to select one application per month as their top choice, the position they'd accept over any other offer.
“This feature shifts applying for a job from a numbers game into a clear signal of true intent," Chait said.
APAC expansion
Greenhouse already partners with more than 200 customers across Asia-Pacific and has processed nine million job applications in the region, with Australia accounting for roughly a third of its Asia-Pacific business.
That growth has prompted the company to establish an Australian office, scaling from zero to 10 employees this year with plans for major expansion in 2026.
