The Map Sciences Australia-based online mapping system, designed for Safer Management of Australian Road Transport (SMART)-approved vehicles, went live this month, according to the NTC.
The tool has been designed to assist drivers of trucks that have been assessed under the national Performance Based Standards Scheme to plan road routes that can cope with SMART vehicle sizes, which can be driven only on select roads. An NTC survey last year revealed route-planning for SMART trucks had been a problem for drivers.
“As the mapping process expands, the new portal will allow operators to easily select the best route for moving their freight across the city, state or country,” said NTC chief executive Nick Dimopoulos.
Safety enhancements – such as details about rest stops, weighbridges and refuelling stations – are yet to be integrated with the new system, but Dimopoulos said NTC was looking to update the maps with these features soon.
