Victoria, Queensland report large gains in job creation

Australian job ads remained steady in August

Job ads in Australia remained steady in August with a 0.1% increase in volume, according to the latest data from ANZ-Indeed.

Its latest job ads bulletin showed that job postings went up 1.9% annually, and up 15.1% against the 2010-19 average.

Callam Pickering, Indeed Senior Economist, said the increase comes amid large gains in Victoria and Queensland, where job ad volumes reached their highest levels since February.

"In August, large gains in Victoria and Queensland were offset by softer results in New South Wales and Western Australia," Pickering said in a statement.

By sector, the Indeed senior economist noted that education saw a strong job ads rebound in August after being a "large drag on growth throughout 2025."

"Both retail and food preparation and service opportunities also grew strongly, reflecting early Christmas hiring," he said. "Retail hiring will ramp up even further as we approach 'Black Friday' sales."

On the other hand, job ads for physicians and surgeons declined in August, according to Pickering.

"But job ads across the healthcare sector generally remain healthy," he added.

The latest job ads data comes in the heels of the latest Labour Force survey, which saw the unemployment rate decline to 4.2% after employment went up by 25,000 people.

"The ongoing resilience in job ads supports our view that the unemployment rate is likely to track broadly sideways," said ANZ Economist Madeline Dunk in a statement. "We expect just one more 25bp rate cut from the RBA in November."
