ATO to welcome high school leavers in new employment programme

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is opening its doors for high school leavers in a bid to help them kickstart their careers.

"The ATO is a big organisation with so many interesting potential career paths. If you're not sure where your career may be heading or you're not currently planning to go to uni, the ATO is a great option," said ATO Assistant Commissioner Kristy Dam in a statement.

"We're a diverse organisation where you can make big things happen."

According to ATO's announcement, its School Leaver programme will offer its successful candidates the following perks:

  • a 12-month programme that combines work experience and formal training (a certificate course)
  • structured on-the-job and corporate training
  • a permanent, full-time job on successful completion
  • a supportive team environment
  • an inclusive and diverse workplace culture
  • a starting salary of $50,977 plus super (APS 1)
  • opportunity for advancement to APS 2, on completion of the programme

Dam added that the programme will give its successful applicants qualifications and valuable skills through a "hands-on and supportive environment."

The programme is open for 2021 and 2022 school leavers in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, Traralgon, Gosford, and Newcastle. They must check the following criteria to be eligible:

  • completed Year 12 in 2021 or will complete Year 12 in 2022
  • an Australian citizen
  • clear a pre-engagement integrity check

Dam added that they are also looking for applicants with good communication and computer skills, as well as those who are resilient, flexible and independent, a team player, and able to learn and embrace new challenges.

According to the government's official portal, available roles include administration officer, client engagement officer, as well as information technology officer.

Applications opened on Monday and will close on September 5, 2022.
