Recruiters need to “get ahead of demand” and hire for skills. Here’s how AI can help

What role does AI play in the future of hiring?

When discussing AI in recruiting, the conversation often veers towards how humans are being replaced, or how it can unfairly limit opportunities for some candidates. But at a time when the next disruption could be just around the corner, recruiters need to create a strong talent pool with limited resources – and this means using data-backed, science-driven technology.

According to Eric Sydell, EVP innovation at Modern Hire, recruiters need to “get ahead of demand” by putting smart systems in place to support a long-term hiring process. This doesn’t mean using an algorithm to make your next hire – it means automating low-value tasks to allow your staff to focus on high-impact activities, and enhancing your talent identification with AI.

Sydell notes that AI can also help remove subjective biases in hiring decisions, allowing employers to hire fairly and prioritise diversity, equity and inclusion.

“One of the big opportunities for 2023 is helping companies understand that DEI and job performance are not either-or outcomes,” Sydell says. “You can actually have both, and AI can help with that.”

He notes that hiring for skills is also becoming increasingly vital, and AI technology can help recruiters look beyond experience to identify a candidate’s key skills. With the chaotic throes of the pandemic behind us, he says now is the time to take a more targeted approach to hiring – and AI is primed to be a vital support tool.

“Many organizations abandoned quality hiring during the throes of the pandemic and work-from-home revolution,” Sydell explains.

“They resorted to hiring anyone who could meet minimum standards. Now, as the employment world begins to process and adapt to the new ways of work, there is a better path forward.”

“Hiring for quality, and doing so with a strategic and long-term view of the business, is the path to success,” he concludes. “And it is more important than ever that organizations balance hiring top quality candidates with DEI concerns.”

Modern Hire will be discussing the role of AI and science in hiring in its webinar on 21 June. Participants will learn how to enhance their talent identification with AI, how to transition to a skills-based model, and how to engage, assess and hire the best talent before your competitors do.
