Uncovering the meaning of leadership and resilience – Peter Stewart of PQSA

In this edition of HRD TV, we sat down with Peter Stewart, CEO of the Paraplegic and Quadriplegic Association of South Australia (PQSA). Recognized as an Excellence Awardee, Australian HR champion, and CEO of the Year, Stewart shared valuable insights into his leadership journey and PQSA's resilience during the pandemic.

Stewart’s leadership journey began in the late 1980s when he started his career in nursing. His expertise and passion for working in the health sector led him to take on various roles both clinical and academic, before eventually becoming the CEO of PQSA. Over the past decade, PQSA has grown from 160 to over 700 employees, providing support to around 1,200 people with disabilities across South Australia.

While the pandemic presented challenges for PQSA, Stewart’s focus on leadership, communication, and support for his employees was integral to PQSA’s resilience during challenging times. PQSA’s initiatives to support its employees include flexible work arrangements, monthly staff forums, “Meet with Pete” sessions (CEO chat sessions), and a range of well-being initiatives.

Stewart highlighted the passion he and his team have for working in the disability sector and the fulfillment and growth opportunities it brings. When asked about why he chose to work in the sector, Stewart responded:

“It's a challenging sector to work in, in the sense that you are providing support to people who are vulnerable, who are most at need. But for me, that challenge is the most amazing thing about working within the disability sector.”

“We are always looking for the right people to work within the sector. And by the right people, we mean people who want to make a profound difference to the lives of people living with disability.”
