Trump complains about 'too many' holidays in US on Juneteenth

US President Donald Trump took to social media on Juneteenth to criticise the number of non-working holidays in the United States.

"Too many non-working holidays in America. It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed. The workers don't want it either!" Trump said on Truth Social.

"Soon we'll end up having a holiday for every once working day of the year. It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" Trump said.

There are 12 Federal Holidays in the United States for 2025, according to the US Office of Personnel Management. This includes Juneteenth, which is marked every June 19th to commemorate the end of slavery in the US.

Trump's Juneteenth plans

Trump's remarks during Juneteenth came as White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president was unlikely to mark the federal holiday.

"I'm not tracking his signature on a proclamation today," Leavitt said as quoted by CNN. "I know this is a federal holiday — I want to thank all of you for showing up to work. We are certainly here, we're working 24/7 right now."

Harrison Fields, White House spokesperson, added that Black Americans care more about Trump's policies.

"Black Americans lined up to support President Trump in historic fashion because of policies that transcend race and align with common sense," Fields said as quoted by NBC News. "The Black community is more interested in results than in performative messages that do more to check a box than anything else."

These statements came despite a previous report from NBC News saying Trump will recognise June 19 as "Juneteenth Day of Observance."

Juneteenth became a federal holiday after former US President Joe Biden signed it into law in 2021.
