Fun Friday: McDonald’s Twitter thread is a lesson in empathy

We hear you - person who runs the McDonald’s Twitter account.

Life in a pandemic can get crazy sometimes that no one ever stops to reflect on what really matters most: the people around us.

McDonald’s began a bit of light-hearted banter on Twitter when the person behind the fast-food giant’s Twitter profile posted about the drudgery of everyday work.

“It’s always, ‘When is the McRib coming back?’ and never, ‘How are you doing, person who runs the McDonald’s account?”

It was an honest – if not hilarious – take on how busy life has been for retailers like McDonald’s and their employees (not the least of which, customer service teams handling queries on social media) who are also counted among essential workers of the food service industry.

The low-key rant went viral with more than 135,000 likes. What followed was an even funnier thread in which other famous brands paused from their brand promotions to give the McDonald’s “person” a shoutout and some TLC.

McDonald’s returned the love with some heartfelt replies. The exchange later became a conversation between friends.

… friends who know the ups and downs of being in the Twitterverse 24/7, that is.

But even with all the humour behind these tweets, Pizza Hut seems to have brought home the point of the conversation: a wellness check for everybody who’s been feeling isolated and exhausted.
