Employers get top marks for health and wellbeing

Free flu shots, yoga classes and fresh fruit – Australian employers are recognising the importance of employee wellbeing with best-practice organisations implementing formalised programs to encourage workplace health.

HRD magazine’s inaugural Employer of Choice survey collected data from over 2,000 employees nationwide, who rated some 200 employers across areas including engagement, career progression and employee wellbeing. Respondents scored companies the highest overall in the Health & Wellbeing category with an average rating of 4.14 out of 5.

The organisational benefits of a happy and healthy workforce are widely known, and companies at the top of their game have a wide range of programs and initiatives in place to promote wellbeing in the workplace.

Here’s a small sample of comments from survey respondents:

“We have a wellbeing program driven by the CEO which promotes healthy eating, exercise and lifestyle. Even when I feel like running is too hard it reminds me as I feel I am an ambassador of exercise for others.”

“We have even gone jogging together as opposed to sitting in a meeting room to strategise about direction.”

“My company offers health initiatives, which encourage healthy behaviours in staff through fresh fruit being provided in the lunchrooms, exercise programs and voluntary PD activities around healthy behaviour.”

Companies vying for the title of Employer of Choice represent a range of industries from banking to health, hospitality, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, professional services and more.

Survey results will be published in issue 13.05 of HRD magazine out this month, which will shine the spotlight on Australia’s top companies as rated by their employees.
